Writing After Retirement: My Fifth Book and a New Co-Writer

One evening in Norwood, New Jersey, I sat down at my computer with an idea that had been on my mind: I wanted to write a book. I had spent more than forty years working with computers, but writing a book was unfamiliar territory. I had memories, old writing, and subjects I cared about. I needed help finding a way to bring them together.

I began by typing a few ordinary sentences about wanting to write. The computer answered with questions. What kind of book? Which part of my life? Who would I like to reach?

That conversation helped me begin. Four books in two languages followed. Now I am happy to introduce my fifth book, which tells the story of how those books were made:

A Computing Man and His New Co-Writer

From Punch Cards to a Conversation

My computing life began in a classroom at Hanyang University in Seoul in 1979. We wrote Fortran and COBOL programs by hand on coding sheets. Punch-card operators entered our work, and we waited to find out whether the program had run. A small mistake could cost another day.

Over the years, I kept learning new systems and new ways to make computers useful. Much of my working life involved listening to clients, understanding their businesses, and solving the problems that stood between them and a working system.

In retirement, I found myself asking the computer for help. I could explain an idea in ordinary language, answer its questions, and work through a chapter a little at a time. Decades of learning the machine's language had brought me to a moment when I could simply talk to it.

The Subjects Were Already Part of My Life

My first four books grew from computers, classical music, the Korean language, and food memories between Seoul and New York. These were subjects I had lived with for years. Writing gave me a reason to return to them, put them in order, and share them with readers.

Along the way, I learned about chapter outlines, translations, book covers, page layouts, and publishing. Each finished book brought another set of questions. I began to think that the process itself might be useful to someone else who wanted to write.

What This Fifth Book Shares

Writing After Retirement brings together personal stories and practical steps from that experience. It follows the work from the first idea to a finished book, including:

  • Choosing a subject and gathering memories and old writing.
  • Planning chapters and building a steady writing routine.
  • Working with AI on drafts while keeping your own voice.
  • Checking facts and reviewing Korean and English translations.
  • Preparing covers, formatting pages, and learning the publishing process.

I include the revisions and the checking because they were a large part of the work. A paragraph that reads smoothly still needs to be examined. A translated sentence needs to carry the meaning and feeling of the original. A cover needs every letter checked.

The Author's Work Continues

For many years, I was the consultant. My clients understood their businesses, and I helped them with the computer. In writing these books, the roles turned around: I brought the memories and the purpose, and the computer helped with structure, drafts, and questions.

I still had to decide which stories belonged, whether a detail was accurate, and whether the words sounded like me. My name is on the cover, and I take responsibility for what is inside. That relationship with my new co-writer is at the heart of this book.

A New Chapter After Retirement

The cover brings together a vintage computer and a modern laptop, with a small golden sun between them. To me, it suggests the connection between a lifetime in computing and this new beginning in writing.

Writing has given me a reason to revisit memories, reconnect with people and places, and keep learning. If you have been thinking about recording your family stories, your working life, or something you have loved for many years, I hope my experience helps you take a first step.

You might begin with one memory and a few sentences. That is how I began.
