Memoirs of Heon Yook: One Life - Work, Music, Language, and Food

Four Books, One Life: Work, Music, Language, and Food

When I look at the four books I have written, they seem to cover very different subjects. One is about computers, another about classical composers, a third about the Korean language, and the fourth about food.

To me, they belong together. Each book records something I have spent years working with, listening to, saying, or remembering.

From Seoul To Silicon: A Life in Computing

서울에서 실리콘까지: 컴퓨팅과 함께한 인생

I came to America in 1985 with a background in mainframe computers and a belief that personal computers would change the way people worked. Over the next four decades, I saw technologies come and go. What stayed with me were the people who needed a problem solved and trusted me to help.

This book follows my life in computing, from Seoul to New York and New Jersey. It is as much about clients, persistence, and human connections as it is about machines.

What Kind of People Were They: From Vivaldi To Puccini

그들은 어떤 사람이었을까: 비발디에서 푸치니까지

When I listen to classical music, I often wonder about the person who wrote it. What kind of life did the composer lead? What was happening beyond the concert hall?

In this book, I introduce composers from Vivaldi to Puccini through their lives as well as their music. It grew from my enjoyment of listening and my curiosity about the people behind the works.

Hangul, from New Jersey

짜장면을 짜장면이라 부르지 못하고: 뉴저지에서 바라본 우리말

Living in America has made me pay closer attention to the Korean words I use every day. A food name on a menu, a spelling on a sign, or a new expression can make me stop and ask why we say it that way.

This book looks at pronunciation, romanization, abbreviations, new words, and the names of Korean food. I wrote it from the perspective of someone who lives between Korean and English.

The Story of Ramyeon: A Food Memoir from Seoul to New York

라면 이야기: 라면을 Ramyeon이라 쓰는 사람의 음식 기억

A bowl of ramyeon can bring back much more than its taste. I remember meals from my childhood in Seoul, family tables, food shared with friends, and familiar flavors I found again after moving to America.

This book follows those memories from Seoul to New York. Food became a way to remember people, places, and the passing of time.

These are four different books, but each gave me a way to write about a part of my life. I hope one of them speaks to your own memories or interests.

The books are available in Korean and English editions. Depending on the title and store, formats include eBook, paperback, and hardcover. You can search for Heon Yook on Amazon or 육헌 on Yes24 in Korea.
