Mercari vs. Poshmark: Which Resale Platform Wins?
If you’ve been following my journey at heonyook.com, you know that I’m constantly looking for the best ways to cycle through quality goods—whether it’s clearing out my own closet or finding a new home for unique finds.
Lately, the big question in the reselling community has been Mercari vs. Poshmark. Having active shops on both Mercari and Poshmark, I’ve spent a lot of time navigating the quirks of each. If you're wondering where to list your next item, here is my honest breakdown of how they stack up.
1. The Selling Experience
Poshmark: The Social Marketplace
Poshmark is essentially "Social Media meets eBay." It requires a bit more "work"—you have to "share" your items to keep them at the top of search results and participate in "Posh Parties."
The Vibe: High-end, fashion-focused, and community-driven.
Best For: Mid-to-high-end designer brands (Nike, Lululemon, Coach) and trendy streetwear.
Mercari: The "Set It and Forget It" App
Mercari is much more straightforward. You list an item, and it stays there. You don’t need to follow people or share your closet daily.
The Vibe: A digital garage sale with a cleaner interface.
Best For: Electronics, collectibles, toys, and more casual "bread and butter" clothing brands.
2. Fees and Earnings (The Big Change)
This is where the two have diverged recently.
Poshmark keeps it simple: They take a flat 20% commission for sales over $15. It sounds high, but it covers the credit card processing and a very easy shipping system.
Mercari recently made waves by removing seller fees entirely. While this sounds amazing (you keep 100% of the sale price!), they shifted the service fees to the buyer. This can sometimes make items look more expensive at checkout, so you have to price competitively.
3. Shipping: Who Makes it Easier?
Poshmark is the undisputed king of shipping. They use a flat-rate $7.97 label for anything up to 5lbs. You can use any free USPS Priority Mail box, which saves a ton of money on packaging.
Mercari offers more variety (USPS, FedEx, UPS). It’s great for very light items (under 4oz) where shipping can be as low as $3.99, but you have to be careful with your weights—if you’re off by an ounce, they might charge you the difference.
4. My Personal Verdict
After managing both shops, here is my strategy:
List on Poshmark if: You have trendy clothes, shoes, or bags and don't mind spending 10 minutes a day "sharing" your closet to stay relevant.
List on Mercari if: You have household items, tech, or lower-priced clothing that you just want to get rid of without the social media "hustle."
Cross-Listing is Key
The truth? I often list on both. Using a cross-listing tool or just manually copying your photos helps you reach two completely different audiences. One man's "stale listing" on Poshmark is a "hot item" on Mercari.
